Today's Featured Band -- Standard Fare

Today's featured band is Sheffield's Standard Fare, a three piece indie pop band comprised of Emma Kupa on bass/vocals, Danny How on guitar/vocals and Andy Beswick on drums that's been hiding from me for the past year. I stumbled across them while wandering through the various Indie Top whatever lists and they kept showing up near the top. It's a shame that I've only just discovered them and I've been deprived of their indie pop goodness for the past 9 months.

The Band (credit: Bar None Records)

The track I'm featuring is "Philadelphia" from their Sheffield Phonographic Corporation/Bar None Records debut, The Noyelle Beat. The song is about a girl who has to wait a year to see her boyfriend in Philadelphia, but she'd like to see him sooner and she'd like for him to come to her but knows he won't. It's a charming song that's coupled with a charmingly creative video.

The Noyelle Beat is out now  for download on Sheffield Phonographic Corporation/Bar None Records at iTunes, Amazon and from the band.

I'm looking forward to seeing Standard Fare when they come to Philadelphia. Hopefully I won't have to wait all year.

Fresh New Music -- Big Wave Riders

I'm starting a new featured called "Fresh New Music" for bands so new they are still in bubble wrap. Today's band is an indie garage/punk band from Finland named Big Wave Riders. There's a lot of good music coming from Finland these days like a previous featured band, French Films and this band is no exception. Big Wave Riders found their way onto my site by simply sending an email with a link to their Soundcloud and You Tube pages and asking me to check them out. I did and they made the cut and in the process created a new feature.

The first track is a live version of "It's Funny Things Aren't Going to Change," an excellent indie pop track that sounds great live. This performance is from December 11 in Helsinki at Semifinal.

The second track is "Big Sound," a great track that is alternative radio ready.

Big Wave Riders - Big Sound by Big Wave Riders

I'm expecting an EP to follow sometime next year and I'm looking forward to seeing them live in the US soon.

New Video from jj -- "Let Them"

Previously featured Swedish dreamscape band jj has released the video for "Let Them," their take on T.I. and Akon. It's exactly what you'd expect, crisp imagery to accompany the crisp melody.

You can also watch the video in High Res over at Sincerely Yours. jj is also releasing a mixtape on Christmas Eve so check back for the link.

It's an Indie Christmas

Greetings from Wyoming! Yes, I'm in Wyoming and while it might be Christmas week, the music doesn't stop so I've picked a few traditional Christmas songs that have been given the Indie Rock treatment and a few original songs that are unlike the usual Christmas songs.

The first track is Oxnard, California-based Catwalk's version of The Chipmunk's 1959 classic, "Christmas Don't Be Late." Fresno's contribution to pop culture is successfully given the Indie treatment.

The next track is from a previous featured band, Best Coast, and Wavves, called "Got Something For You," a surf pop song that lifts the dark clouds of winter and you can almost hear the Southern California sun (although there's not much sun in Southern California today). If you could spend Christmas at the beach, this would be the soundtrack.

The third track is from Mississippi's Dent May and his 1980's synth pop influenced "Holiday Face." This is destined to be an Indie Pop Christmas classic.

Dent May - Holiday Face by IndieRockReviews

The next track is San Francisco dreampop duo Silver Swans' entry into the Christmas sweepstakes, "Holidays," a light and ethereal track that just floats from your speakers. It's also available as a free download via Last.fm.

The final track is from Brooklyn's gloom rockers, Crystal Stilts, entitled "Practically Immaculate." One review called it an "Ian Curtis-led hymnal" and I'm inclined to agree.

If you like these bands, please check out their pages, buy their records, see their shows and tell your friends. They can only keep making all this good music with your support (and your money helps, too).

Have an excellent Christmas and a very Indie New Year. I'll see everyone back here in January.

Today's Featured Band -- jj

After a brief hiatus to see a few shows of bands that I've featured in the blog, I'm back with a new discovery, jj, a Swedish indie pop band that with a lead singer who's voice cuts through the listener like a cold winter wind off the North Sea. They released their first full-length album in 2009, No. 2, to critical acclaim and followed it up with No. 3. jj isn't your typical Swedish pop band, if all you know about the Swedish music scene is ABBA, The Cardigans and Ace of Base, jj is something quite different. They are very atmospheric and their songs are crisp and very unique. How unique you ask, well listen to the three selections and see for yourself.

The first track from No. 3 is "Let Go".

"Let Go" by jj from Secretly Jag on Vimeo.

The second and third tracks are where jj comes at you from a completely different angle, covers of popular hip-hop tracks. The first is "I'm the One/Money on My Mind," a mash-up of The xx's "Intro" and Lil Wayne's "Money on My Mind." I admit, I have no idea who Lil Wayne is, but if you're a fan of indie dreamscape pop, you won't know that this is a hip-hop track turned into dreamscape.

The third track is jj's take on T.I.'s (who?) "Let Them Talk" and Akon's (again, I ask, who?) "Right Now" entitled "Let Them." From my research, these are quite hardcore rap songs, but you'd never know that after jj gives it their dreamscape treatment.

No. 2 and No. 3 are out now on Secretly Canadian Records, on iTunes, Amazon and from the label.

Pictures from the Peter Hook Show, December 2

Here are some pictures from the Peter Hook show on December 2. Enjoy.

Pictures and a mini-review of tonight's Badly Drawn Boy will be up later this week.

Peter Hook, Joy Division and Me

The description "once in a lifetime" gets bandied about almost to the point where it's lost all meaning. But tonight I'm at a truly "once in a lifetime" event, Peter Hook, the bassist for the legendary band Joy Division has put together a backing band and is touring the US. He's performing Joy Division's debut album, Unknown Pleasures and also doing some other Joy Division and New Order songs. He's doing this, not for the money, but in memory his dear friend and band mate Ian Curtis. This is the first time these songs have been performed in the US by a member of Joy Division.

I'll have pictures up after the show. If you don't catch Peter Hook at any of his other dates in the US, you're missing a true "once in a lifetime" event because I don't think this will ever happen again.

Today's Featured Artist -- Zola Jesus

Today's featured artist is Los Angeles based, by way of Wisconsin, Zola Jesus (nee Nika Roza Danilova), a 21 year old classically trained opera singer turned goth singer in the mold of Siouxsie Sioux (less the Banshees). She's starting to make a name for herself on the indie and alternative circuit and opened for The xx, a previous featured band on their North American tour; she is just wrapping up a solo tour of Europe.

The featured track is "Sea Talk," the first single from her Sacred Bones Records EP Valusia. The song is very dark, as you'd expect from a goth singer, but it retains the lightness of the Siouxsie Sioux (didn't think that Siouxise Sioux could have a lighter side, did you?) and it doesn't club you over the head with the bass line that features prominently in most goth music (The Cure, the aforementioned Siouxsie and the Banshees, etc). It is a good track that showcases Zola's deep voice and gives the listener a good idea of her range.

The second track from Zola Jesus is "Night," from the EP Stridulum. This track is similar to "Sea Talk" in that it has the Siouxsie Sioux influence and the instruments take a back seat to Zola's deep voice that show off her operatic training.

As a special feature, Pitchfork, has a POV concert where you can pick from 6 different camera angles. Click here to watch over on Pitchfork.com.

Valusia is out now on Sacred Bones Records for download at iTunes and Amazon and for purchase on CD and vinyl from the label. Stridulum is available at iTunes and Amazon. I'm looking forward to seeing her when she returns stateside for a proper headlining tour.

Free Downloads from Editors

UK band Editors is offering special free downloads between now and the release of their complete boxed set in February. Click below and enter your email address to receive the link for the free download of the week.

Today's Featured Band -- French Films

Today's featured band is Helsinki, Finland's French Films, a five piece indie rock band that is just now appearing on radar screens in the United States. Their first single, "Golden Sea," from their 4 track EP of the same name, is fun, sunny and nothing you'd expect from a band that hails from Finland, a country known more for salted herring and Formula One World Champions than indie rock bands. Take a listen and tell me what you think.

Golden Sea is out now on Gaea Finland from Juno and Finnish online record shop Record Shop X on 12" vinyl (yes, you will need a turntable so go ask your parents' for theirs if you don't have one). Sorry, not available from US iTunes or Amazon for download yet.

New Video from Mackintosh Braun -- Could It Be

Here's the first video from a previous featured band, Portland, Oregon's indie dance pop band Mackintosh Braun, for the song "Could It Be."

Mackintosh Braun's Chop Shop Records debut, Where We Are, is available at iTunes and Amazon. Happy Thanksgiving!

Update on The New Division's Forthcoming Album

Just as I posted yesterday's featured band, The New Division, they announced that their next EP, The Rookie, will be released on January 11. No information on distribution channels, so stay tuned for availability.

If you'd like to download yesterday's track, Starfield, click here to go to the band's Bandcamp site to download it and a remixed version.

Today's Featured Band -- Crystal Castles

Today's featured band is Toronto, Ontario's Crystal Castles, an electo-pop two piece consisting of Ethan Kath and Alice Glass that has just started to receive airplay on US alternative radio. Their first single off their second album Crystal Castles (II), "Not in Love", is a cover of Canadian new wave hair band Platinum Blonde's one and only hit, but with one big difference: Robert Smith. Yes, the very same Robert Smith of The Cure. This is one of the few examples where the cover is vastly better than the original, but I'll let the listener judge for themselves.

The original version by Platinum Blonde

Here's a second song by Crystal Castles which is more representative of their electronic sound. This is "Celestica," also off the Crystal Castles II album.

Crystal Castles II is out now at iTunes and Amazon. They will be coming to Philadelphia on Tuesday, March 15 to play the TLA. Click here for tickets.

Tell me what you think; click on the comments and leave your thoughts.

Today's Featured Band -- The New Division

Think about where a band that cites Joy Division, New Order and Depeche Mode as influences would hail from. Nope, you're wrong. Try the hotbed of indie music called Riverside, California and the band is The New Division (get it, it's a pun). The band, a four piece from the aforementioned Riverside, California, have been self releasing EP's since 2009 starting with their self titled The New Division. The band has also released one single, "Art Kraft" from their upcoming EP The Rookie and the good people over at Pitchfork previewed their next single, "Starfield," to rave reviews.

The first time I heard "Starfield," I was hooked. It sounded like what Joy Division would have sounded like had Ian Curtis not passed away before the band could take advantage of the coming advances in modern electronic music. For a band that is doing everything themselves and without the benefit of a label to support them, this track is excellent; it's well produced and keeps with the Joy Division ethic of doing a whole lot with very little (I didn't hear the Martin Hannett trademark sound effects made from unusual sounds like an aerosol spray can, but that's probably coming soon). I'm looking forward to hearing the rest of the tracks on the EP when it's released sometime next year.

Starfield by The New Division

Art Kraft by The New Division

The New Division is out now at iTunes. The Rookie's release date is TBD. Check back for more information or visit the band's site. I'm looking forward to hearing more from them next year and seeing them out on tour.

Today's Featured Band -- White Lies

Today's feature band isn't necessarily a new band, but chances are they're new to you. The band is White Lies, a West London based band that will be releasing its second album on January 17th in the UK and January 18th in the US. They are the worthy successor to the greatest band to ever exist, Joy Division, right down to the dark lyrics about love and relationships and the front man who bears more than a striking resemblance to Ian Curtis. The first song from their first album of the same name, "To Lose My Life", is a song about loving someone so much that you want to be with them forever.

The second track, "Unfinished Business," is my personal favorite. It's a breakup song about not being able to get over someone. The collective wisdom of the Internet says that it's about the ghost of a murdered boyfriend who comes back to haunt the girlfriend who killed him, but I think that the lyric "there's blood on your hands/and I know it's mine" is more figurative than literal. I think that everyone who's been through a breakup thinks that the other person has blood on their hands, and this song works as a haunting reminder of how it feels to not have closure, you feel like a ghost.

To Lose My Life is out now at iTunes, Amazon, and directly from the band. The new album, Rituals, will be out on Geffen Records in the US on January 18th and on Fiction Records on January 17th in the rest of the world. White Lies will be doing a mini North American tour to support the new album with dates in Seattle (January 22), Los Angeles (Sold Out), New York (January 27), and Toronto (January 29). If I'm not able to catch them in New York on the mini-tour, I trust I'll see them in Philadelphia when they come through on the main tour.

Vote for Warpaint's "Undertow" for "This Week's Best Freshman Video"

Warpaint, a past featured band, is up for the Week's Best Freshman Video on MTVU with Undertow. Click here to vote.

As a refresher, here's the video in question:

Warpaint will be in Philadelphia on December 3 at Voyeur Nightclub. Click here for tickets.

Today's Featured Band -- You Say Party

Today's featured band is British Columbia's You Say Party, a dance punk band from the labels Paper Bag Records and C.T.M. (Club.The.Mammoth). The band was originally known as You Say Party! We Say Die! but changed their name to just You Say Party earlier this year after the death of their original drummer, Devon Clifford. The band has been recording since 2005 and 2010 marked their breakout year in North America and Europe with the release of the album XXXX to critical and commercial success. The first song from the album is "There is XXXX (Within My Heart)," a rocking indie dance number that will get any room up and out on the tiles.

The second track from XXXX is "Dark Days," an excellent track that has a very strong Joy Division influence.

I highly recommend You Say Party for it's excellent example of indie dance punk and it's great sound that goes well with Marina and the Diamonds, Ida Maria and fellow Canadians Metric. You Say Party's new wave sound will be a hit at any party and hopefully soon on the radio in the US.

XXXX is out now at iTunes, Amazon, and from directly from Paper Bag Records. I hope to see them on their next North American tour when they come to Philadelphia.

Today's Featured Band -- Seapony

Today's featured band is Seattle's Seapony, a lo-fi trio that specializes in sun drenched songs that will have you asking "Are you sure Seapony is from Seattle? I don't hear any grungy guitars and I don't want to kill myself after listening to it." Yes, they are from Seattle and there's more to the Seattle indie scene than Nirvana tribute bands and flannel shirts. The song, "Dreaming," is their new single from Double Denim Records, is upbeat and has a retro feel that is becoming more prevalent in indie rock. Some might even call Seapony a twee band in the style of Belle and Sebastian and last week's featured band, Allo Darlin', but I would put them into the retro category and include them with Best Coast and other surf pop bands like San Francisco's Girls (a surf pop band who's songs are emo versions of the Beach Boys). I'm looking forward to hearing the EP and hopefully seeing them when they make it to the East Coast.

Seapony - Dreaming from Double Denim Records on Vimeo.

The EP is out as a free downloand from Bandcamp and Dreaming is available as a limited edition 7" from Double Denim Records (order now, only 700 will be pressed).

Today's Featured Band -- Tennis

Today's featured band is Denver's husband and wife lo-fi indie band Tennis. Over the summer they released an EP entitled Marathon on Underwater Peoples Records and have since signed with Oxford, Mississippi's Fat Possum Records and January will find the band releasing their first album, Cape Dory. Denver's Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore spent the past year living on a sailboat and exploring the Eastern Seaboard and in the process writing songs inspired by the places they visited. The album's title is the name of their boat, the Cape Dory. Tennis has an upbeat, summer sound that works well, something you don't usually associate with lo-fi and fuzzy guitars. It is unlike anything being currently played on the radio right now and it's the perfect antidote to a gray, cold winter's day. The other two songs on the EP, "Baltimore" and "Marathon" are excellent examples of their style and the theme of exploration that is present throughout the EP.

Tennis -- Cape Dory

Tennis -- Marathon, When You Walk In The Room, Baltimore

Tennis will be playing an R5 Productions show at Kung Fu Necktie on December 5. Click here for tickets. Cape Dory drops on Fat Possum Records on January 18, 2011, click here to pre-order.

Today's Featured Band: Best Coast

Today's featured band is Best Coast, a surf pop band from (are you ready for this) Los Angeles. The band, Bethany Cosentino on vocals and Bobb Bruno on guitar, released their first album this summer, Crazy for You on Mexican Summer Records. The featured track (not available on the 12" vinyl), "When I'm With You", is a fuzzed out summer classic that will stick in your head, but in a good way. The video features a character similar to one from a major hamburger chain and in a most ironic (and very Southern California) scene, this very similar marketing character comes out of an In-n-Out Burger and hands the bag to Bethany.

The rest of the is a summertime classic that will feel right at home and if you play it during the depths of winter, you'll have an instant summer day coming out of your speakers.

Best Coast is about to embark on the European leg of their tour and will be in Las Vegas starting on January 5th. Crazy for You is out now at iTunes, Amazon, and from Mexican Summer Records.

New Music Sunday -- Allo Darlin'

For today's New Music Sunday I bring to you Allo Darlin', a London-based indie pop four piece band that's been around since 2009, but the members have been recording with other bands and the lead singer, Elizabeth Morris, has been releasing her own music since 2007 and records with the Tender Trap. Allo Darlin' just completed a successful US mini-tour in conjunction with CMJ 2010 in New York (they were in Philadelphia in October and had I known about them before last night, I would have gone to see their set at Blocktoberfest). Their self-titled album was released in the US last October and has been gathering critical acclaim.

The first video is "The Polaroid Song", the first single from Allo Darlin'. The song itself is very fun and has a great guitar line and some shades of Belle and Sebastian's chamber pop sound. The video is a take on The Breakfast Club and the memories that an old picture can evoke. The use of 16mm film and not digital or even videotape recording gives it a warm feeling that digital film just can't create and supports the song's theme of fuzzy memories that a forgotten picture can bring back.

Allo Darlin' -- "The Polaroid Song"

The second track is the second single, "Dreaming". The song is an invitation from a girl to a guy to go out on the town and the guy is hesitant because he likes the girl (and she likes him) but he doesn't want to get hurt but knows that the two of them have a connection, chemistry if you will. The video was shot on Super-8, giving it a very grainy but warm and intimate feel, like being invited to watch the couple as they go out on the town. The video and the song complement each other and capture the feeling of following your heart despite knowing that you're going to get hurt in the end.

Allo Darlin' -- Dreaming

A comment left on the review over at The Line of Best Fit called the band and the album "music to fall in love by" and I couldn't agree more. The entire album works as the soundtrack of a relationship and captures the feelings of two people who steal looks on the night bus and hold hands when no one's looking.

Allo Darlin' is out now at Amazon as a download, CD (yes, they still sell them), and from the band on vinyl, CD and as a download (buy it from the band, all the proceeds go into their pocket). If anyone at R5 is reading this, try to bring them back to town.

Tell me what you think about Allo Darlin' down in the comments section.

New Music -- Warpaint

Warpaint, an all-girl band from Los Angeles recently found their way onto my iPod in the form of a free Amazon MP3 download for the song Undertow from their first major label album, The Fool. I hadn't heard of them before and after listening to the song, I was drawn in by the complex sound and very haunting lyrics. This is not for a casual listen, Warpaint's punk influenced fuzzy and complex sound requires three to four listens before you hear all that's going on and pick up on the subtlies of the band. The other songs from the album are just as complex, Set Your Arms Down is another track that starts slowly and builds to a smoldering fury that could burst into flames at any moment.

If you like The xx, you will love Warpaint, this is more make-out music for the smart set.

Warpaint is on tour in Europe and will be back in the US on November 19th and they're playing an R5 Productions show in Philadelphia on December 3rd. Click here for tour information and tickets.

The Fool is available now on Rough Trade Records from iTunes, Amazon and direct from the band.
